Author Topic: How to weld cast iron with a MiG welder. Most gray cast iron will not MIG weld worth a crap. Nodular iron seems to be OK, cast steel welds great. I have MIG welded many diesel turbocharger housings and exhaust manifolds without issue.
I don't worry about short welds. I preheat the parts, burn it in well and cool down slowly. Never had a failure modifying components, not effecting a repair. Shit iron like gas engine exhaust manifolds, blocks, etc is a waste of time. Braze it. Glad to see you got the job done. That part could have been silver brazed in about 15 minutes from start of cleaning to all done. I use an abrasive blaster to clean parts before repairing.
That method leaves jagged breaks able to fit together and return to the original shape of the part. You do not want a vee at the break because the silver flows best into a tiny gap and does not like to form a bead unless you force it to. You would need an air-acetylene Prestolite or plumber's torch or an oxy-acetylene torch that can get the part red hot. The strength would have been equal to new and there would be no globs of metal to grind off.
The key thing is that the part was straight, not ring-shaped, as mentioned in post 2. Cast iron rings or filigree work are very challenging, whatever method is used to weld or braze it.
Rings go "tink" all too easily. Herb in Delco , , thermite liked this post. Brazing works best on grainy, dirty, crappy Chinese cast iron. For me, the MIG is only useful on sheet metal. I'm glad it worked out for you, I would have never attempted that weld with a MIG. Different strokes I mig cast iorn frequently, and have very good success. A 12x12 right front corner of my 17 in r. It was very fragile and eventually the shaper beat it up and it came loose.
I ground out all the braze and got to work with the mig. This shaper is from the s so its good old grey? Cast iorn. Guess it depends on the welder behind the machine. I love it.
